of the 13th century Scotland was under the oppressive rule
of the army of Edward I . A series of events meant that
Wallace would become the figurehead for resistance to
English rule. In Dundee Wallace was attacked by the son of
Selby,the English constable . He killed Selby and had to
leave Dundee . A soldier found Wallace fishing on the River
Irvine and demanded his catch. Wallace offered half of it
and the soldier attacked him. Wallace killed him with his
fishing rod. King Edward of England advanced with his army north to invade Scotland . Edward occupied Stirling Castle . In September 1297 the Scottish forces of William Wallace gathered at Stirling Bridge , in front of the castle ,and overcame the English in the most notorious defeat ever suffered by an English army.
