Castle of Mey in Caithness was the historical home of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother who bought it in 1952 after the death of her husband King George VI . The castle is in the far north of Scotland overlooking the Pentland Firth and the Orkneys . One of the former owners of the castle , the 14th Earl of Caithness opened many flagstone quarries in Caithness . The castle has extensive grounds and features a high protective wall , known as ' The Great Wall of Mey ' which shelters the woods and gardens . The walled garden was developed by the Queen Mother over many years .
