Dunvegan Castle is the ancestral home of
the Clan Macleod . The 29th clan chief is John
Macleod of Macleod ( real name John Wolrige-Gordon
) . At the age of 16 he was confirmed head of the
Macleods by the Lord Lyon . The castle's roof is in
a poor condition and repairs will cost £10
million . Three years ago Macleod decided to sell
the Cuillins and the castle to finance the repairs
. A buyer has not come forward and now he intends
to donate the castle and Cuillins to the government
in return for the repair work being carried out .
The John Muir Trust owns part of the Cuillins .
Ramblers Scotland have always disputed the
ownership of the Cuillins . The local council said
The Cuillins represent the heart of Skye and the
mountains have been an inspiration to climbers ,
poets and authors for centuries .
The square keep in the north-east probably dates
to the 14th century. The Fairy Tower was added in
the 16th century. The old keep was in ruins by the
end of the 18th century and was rebuilt as an
extension to the Fairy Tower. In the 1840s it was
again extended and rebuilt .
It is said that to reach Dunvegan Castle
you must cross the Fairy Bridge. Castle.
