Fort Augustus Abbey for saleA property tycoon has put an historic Scottish abbey up for auction for more than £1million, starting a scramble among local people to raise the cash. Brendan Kiely is asking for offers for Fort Augustus Abbey on the shores of Loch Ness, which his Bury-based firm Hometrader bought for £850,000 in June. Villagers and a trust in the 600-strong community near the former Benedictine monastery want to buy it before it goes to auction. The Fort Augustus Abbey Preservation Trust made a bid for the property when previous owner, TV naturalist Terry Nutkins, sold it to Hometrader. Mr Kiely, 36, who lives in a manor in Bury, says he might not sell it to them. The former bricklayer said: "One man has already offered me a million. If I don't get what I want at public auction I'll keep it and develop it myself. "I've already spent a lot of time and money on it. |
