Islanders are celebrating the success of what is believed to be the largest ever community buy-out of a Scottish estate. The 50,000-acre Amhuinnsuidhe Castle estate on North Harris was put up for sale last April by cider millionaire Johnathan Bulmer. A trust was set up by the 800-strong Western Isles community to raise the £4.5m price tag. Islanders were formally told the news that their bid had been accepted at a public meeting in Tarbert. The application was made in partnership with the John Muir Trust, a charity set up to protect remote beauty spots, and millionaire businessman Ian Scarr Hall, who has bought the estate's castle and fishing rights. Businessman Ian Scarr Hall has bought the castle . He said he planned to use it for corporate events aimed at improving the environment. A major celebration day on Harris is planned later in March. Friday night's meeting in Tarbert heard that it was a truly historic day for the people of North Harris. However, islanders were also warned that it was just the beginning of the story and that the hard work would now begin. The North Harris Trust bought the sporting rights on the estate, which contains five loch and river systems, mountains and beaches

This castle was built in 1868 by the Earl of Dunmore . It is owned

by Jonathan Bulmer , the cider heir . The estate covers most of

North Harris. It is part of a National Scenic Area and is

designated under European law for its outstanding plant and

bird life.
