Auctioneers are hoping to fetch
£1 million for the ruins of a 13th Century
castle in the town made famous by poet Dylan
Thomas, it emerged today. Laugharne Castle, which
has breathtaking views of the Taf estuary in West
Wales, will be advertised as far afield as America,
according to estate agent Nicolas Rees. He said:
There is a lot of interest in castle sales as
they are very rare indeed. We will market this in
America as we are certain it will attract a huge
amount of interest. The 13th Century castle
has been in the same Ravenscroft Starke family
since 1740, but is now being sold to settle a
family trust, Mr Rees said. He said Laugharne had
captured the interest of Hollywood stars, authors,
painters, poets because of its magic and
stunning location. Dylan Thomas lived at the
Boathouse in Laugharne and drank at Browns Hotel,
which is also due to go under the hammer later this
month. The town is understood to have attracted
recent interest from James Bond star Pierce
Brosnan. Author Richard Hughes, who wrote A High
Wind in Jamaica, wrote his second novel while
staying in the Castle House and painter Augustus
John was also a frequent visitor. The castle comes
complete with a nine-bedroom Grade II Georgian
house which is now being run as a bed and
breakfast. Mr Rees, added that the castle, which
opens to tourists in the summer, is maintained by
Cadw, the Welsh heritage body. He explained:
The new owners will not have to worry about
upkeep as the castle comes in title only &endash;
its leased in perpetuity to Cadw who are
responsible for the maintenance, upkeep and
conservation. Mr Rees, who last year
auctioned Cardigan Castle for £500,000, said
they were expecting bids of anywhere up to £1m
for this latest sale. The castle is being auctioned
at 2pm on June 12 at the Royal Ivy Bush in
Carmarthen.
In 1996 the castle hosted the
premiere party for the film Loch Ness starring Ted
Danson and Joely Richardson.
