Portencross
Castle Ayrshire tower house boasts a dramatic
position, perched on a rocky promontory above the
sea, with an undulating grassy area on one side,
the old harbour on the other, and stunning views.
It was built in the mid to late-14th century, with
a wing added some years later and further
alterations made in the 17th and 20th centuries,
including concrete roofs and a wooden staircase.
The castle is four storeys high. The floors and
staircases still remain, although they are
partially ruined. Portencross holds significant
historical value. In 1315, Robert
the Bruce,
took away the lands (including those on which the
property stands) belonging to Godfrey de Ros, who
had failed to support him in the fight against the
English, and gave them to his loyal follower,
Robert Boyd. It's believed that Robert II stopped
at Portencross on his way from Rothesay Castle to
his coronation at Scone in 1371. Both Robert II and
Robert III used the property on their crossings to
and from the islands of the Firth of Clyde, and a
number of Royal Charters were issued from the
property. In the mid 1700s to early 1800s, the
castle was handed over for use by fishermen who
ripped out much of the interior, causing subsequent
decay. In 1910 a concrete slab roof was put on to
protect the vaulted ceiling, but this is now
starting to crumble and the steel girders holding
it are rusting.
