Authentic
medieval castle for sale in Slovakia, in the heart of
central Europe
The Slovak Heritage Office is using modern methods to sell
off some of its history while preserving it at the same
time. The office has put together a compilation of almost
100 listed historical buildings for sale on a CD-ROM,
most of them available for a price that should be accessible
to most Western pockets. "The disc contains details and
photographs of about 50 manor houses, two castles, six
bourgeois houses and 12 houses that belonged to the
lower aristocracy," Luboslav Skoviera, head of information
at the Slovak Heritage Office,. Available for the bargain
price of a single koruna (0.025 euros) is Viglas castle
which dates back to the late 14th century. Set on a hill and
surrounded by high walls, the castle lies in the centre of
the country. But be warned - anyone buying the historic
property will need to spend several million euros renovating
it and converting it from a ruin. It's a similar story with
the other medieval castle on offer, Povazie castle.
Dating back to the second half of the 13th century, the
property is built on a massive rock in the northwest of the
country. The price of such properties varies depending on
their condition and on the surrounding ground and the
locality. Small manor houses can be bought for between
50,000 and 250,000 euros while larger-scale buildings are on
the market for up to 900,000 euros. Bourgeois houses located
in the cities are selling for 25,000 to 125,000 euros but
those in the countryside are cheaper with an asking price of
as little as 2,500 euros. And, says Skoviera, interest in
such properties is growing. "Over the last few years we have
regularly been contacted by people who want to buy a
historic building," he said. "At the same time, people who
came by historic properties through restitution during the
1990s after the fall of Communism want to sell them," he
added. Since Slovakia joined the European Union on May 1,
foreign interest in acquiring such properties has mounted as
EU citizens are free to buy property in the country. Nowhere
more than in neighbouring Austria where salaries are five
times higher than in Slovakia. "We have registered a lot of
interest from Austria recently," said Skoviera. These
buildings - witnesses to the country's medieval past - are
scattered across the whole of Slovakia, although most of
them are situated in the central and eastern regions of the
mountainous country, which for centuries formed part of the
Austro-Hungarian empire. In most cases the properties are
owned by the local authority or are in private ownership.
But, warned Skoviera, budding castle owners will have to be
prepared to expend a lot of energy. "The buildings are in
bad condition and need to be renovated, or there may be a
problem with the sellers," he said. When it comes to
renovating such listed buildings owners must conform to
strict directives set out by the Slovak Heritage Office;
historic properties cannot be renovated without its
agreement. For example, plastic windows or modern roofs are
forbidden and anyone infringing strict standards can face
hefty fines, Skoviera noted.
