Eilean Donan Castle has a fascinating history going back to the 12th century . The Mackenzie clan claims that Robert the Bruce sheltered at Eilean Donan during the winter of 1306 to 1307; the castle avoided any other involvement in the Wars of Scottish Independence. On 10 May 1719 HMS Worcester, HMS Flamborough and HMS Enterprise anchored off Eilean Donan Castle and sent a boat ashore under a flag of truce to negotiate with Spanish soldiers in the castle . The soldiers refused to negotiate and the frigates opened fire until the castle was almost completely destroyed .
